As Tye reached her first birthday, she moved into several new stages of development. With a background in Early Childhood Education, I see each step in relation to other developments and emerging skills. Watching a child grow and reach new milestones is always miraculous, and I know I'm not the first parent to observe my child's changes in complete awe. This past month has been a huge one for Tye.
Of course, the most obvious recent development is Tye's ability to walk. While walking itself is a major milestone, it also opens a child to a whole new world of learning opportunities at rapid-fire pace. When Tye moves about now, it's on two feet as she uses her hands to explore freely.
Tye has also expanded her functional vocabulary. In addition to mama and daddy (adapted from the original dada), she now says doggie, woof, uh-oh, Ziggy (our cat's name), eye(s), hi, and Woof Woof. Along with these new words has emerged categorization in the form of overgeneralization. Tye first learned doggie and would say "doggie" whenever we saw a dog on a walk or whenever she heard a dog bark (and then she would "woof" back). Now, all animals are doggies, from her stuffed moose to illustrations of elephants and hippos. But, only animals are doggies, proving Tye knows that doggies, moose, elephants, hippos, and a variety of other creatures are all animals. That they don't all say "woof" will come later. Along the same lines, as of right now, all body parts are labeled expressively as eyes (although Tye knows both eyes and nose receptively- in other words, she can accurately point to each upon request, even if she can't yet say the word nose).
Perhaps my favorite new development is Tye's fascination with stuffed animals and dolls. She loves to empty her bins of plush toys, pulling each one out separately and hugging it tightly before she tosses it aside to hug the next. This isn't just a hugging skill, though. Tye has formed special attachments to a few of her toys, like the plush Santa in her first walking video, a Beanie Baby puppy that looks like Mico, and a yellow and blue Swedish-looking moose.
Oh, and were you wondering earlier what Woof Woof might mean? It's the name bestowed upon Tye's absolute favorite stuffed animal, a blue corduroy dog that followed us home from Seattle- or perhaps more truthfully, was dragged to Chicago by a little bald girl with a new obsession.
Woof Woof is Tye's newest source of comfort and companionship (a happy new recipient, considering my breasts are not always available for cuddling). Since she first clutched his soft blue fur, Tye has barely let go. He's been through airport security, on car rides, in shopping carts, and snuggled in the Ergo beside Tye on errands and dog walks. Almost every time Tye nurses to sleep now, whether it's for a nap or the night, Woof Woof is clutched in her arms. It's a sweet attachment that shows Tye's emotional development and emerging play skills. She's morphing from baby to big kid right before my eyes.

Where's Tye?
Okay, we're going to play a little game here. Do you know where I am?
No? Okay. Try again. Now do you know where I am?
No? You give up? Okay, let me show you.... I'm in Mico's crate!
It's my new favorite place to play. As soon as I see it and remember how much fun I have crawling around inside of it, I giggle as loud as I can and sprint towards the dark, cavernous space. I even love to close the gate behind me and look out through the metal bars at Mico and laugh. He doesn't mind, but I don't think he finds it as funny as I do.

Six Thousand Words... and then some
This sequence of another baby and dog (not Tye and Mico) is even cuter, if that's possible. Plenty of people have thought it was our family because both the dog and baby look so similar to ours! Perhaps we'll work on our own version...

Early Rising
Tye's sleep "schedule" is still far from regular. She has a pattern, but definitely not a set schedule. The past two mornings, Tye's been up bright and early- yesterday at 5:30 when Tyler left for work, and this morning a little after 6. Compared to the past few weeks of waking between 7 and 8, this is early for her. The upside is that we are accomplishing a lot each morning before the unseasonable heat sets in. This morning, by the time we left the house at 9:30, we had apples and kale in the dehydrator, I had eaten a good breakfast (rare in itself!), we went on a run with Mico, and I showered and dressed.
This morning was Tye's first run with me, and it went really well. Prior to this, we'd only used the stroller twice, and both times we used the car seat adapter. I was cautiously optimistic about the stroller, and now that's she's six months old, we can run together. Because Tye can't see me now that she's facing forwards, I wondered how long she would go before she wanted some confirmation it was still me pushing her along. Knowing how much she dislikes being in her car seat, I wondered if being strapped into a different seat would be equally miserable for her. On top of my concerns for Tye, I was very nervous about running with Mico next to the stroller. He does well running by my side and the trainer worked with him on walking next to the stroller, but combining those two seemed a potential disaster.
I packed the borrowed Ergo carrier in the bottom of the stroller, leashed Mico, carried the stroller downstairs, spent 15 minutes adjusting the straps, and finally, we were off. The run went really well! I learned that Mico does a good enough job running close to me that I could loop his leash diagonally around my torso, over the shoulder, with enough slack for him to run and still enough leash for me to grab if I need to (but if you ever see me with a rope burn on my right shoulder, now you know how I got it!).
Tye was great! She made it almost two miles before we stopped so she could nurse in the Ergo, and I think she wanted to nurse because she'd had the hiccups for quite some time by that point. We walked as she nursed, covered by the hood, and when she finished, she went back in the stroller for the rest of the run. Mico was the reason we had to finally head back- he was finished running after about two and a half miles, and with the temperatures rising quickly, I decided to honor his puppydog "don't make me keep going" eyes. Maybe tomorrow we'll drop him off and keep going!
If this is how we get to spend our early mornings, I'm all about it. Besides, I couldn't ask for a sweeter alarm clock.

Signs of Spring
Weather in Chicago has finally turned towards spring.
I know you're probably thinking, She has nothing to talk about besides the weather? Really? But for our family, the warmer weather affects huge portions of our lives. At least three times a day, I bundle up Tye to put her in the carrier and take her out to walk Mico. When it's cold, the breeze takes her breath away and she takes quick gasps of air and her nose turns pink. We don't stay out for longer than we need to (fortunately, Mico is quick about doing his business), so Mico has loads of puppy energy that he then attempts to unleash inside- and we end up with a 110 pound wrecking ball sprinting from one end of our tiny place to the other and back again.
With the highs near 50 the past 3 days, things are finally changing. Sunday, I went for a run outside for the first time since my first trimester, almost a year ago. It was fabulous. I even brought Mico, who made an excellent running companion now that he can heel. Monday and Tuesday mornings, Tye and I took Mico on hour-long walks around our neighborhood. Mico had his exercise for the day (no more wrecking ball runs!), Tye took her morning nap in the Kozy Carrier, and I enjoyed being outside- and a calm dog for the rest of the day. It's such a wonderful way to start the day. If the rain holds off the rest of the week, we'll keep up our new routine.
This afternoon as I folded and put away Tye's fleece, I thought about how we won't likely see any super-frigid temperatures again this season. We'll probably still receive more snow, but not temps down in the single or negative digits- so the hardest part is over for this year (not that rain will be easy, but at least we have an umbrella for that). We did it- Tye and I survived taking Mico out through the worst of winter. Oh, sweet, warm relief.
(I really hope I'm not jinxing Chicago's weather and preparing us for record-breaking lows next week...)

Marley and Mico
Before Mico, we had a Boxer named Marley. Marley had his issues, but he was a great dog to have at home.

One year for Christmas, my mother-in-law gave me the book Marley and Me. I read the stories of the disobedient, destructive yellow lab and was thankful that our Marley was such a good dog. I followed the tales and could relate to the ups and downs of pet ownership and the bond that develops between owner and dog. I cried at the end- huge, choking sobs- while I hugged my Marley. Marley passed away last February, while the Marley and Me movie was still in theatres, and I still haven't seen the movie. I know it would break my heart more than any movie should, and I just don't want to spend an hour and a half crying.
Mico entered our lives just weeks later, weighing roughly 90 pounds less than he currently does, and was such a needed source of laughter in our lives with his floppy gray ears and massive paws.

He's been a handful, though, to say the least. More than a few times, I've mentally referenced Marley and Me and thought, He could be worse. Maybe I shouldn't have been pressing my luck all those times. Yesterday, while visiting my parents in the suburbs, I left Mico in their bathroom as we've done so many times so he can't access the whole house and destroy at will. When I came home, I opened the door to find this.
I think we named the wrong dog Marley.

Training Day
Today was a big day for our family. Today, I dropped off Mico at dog training. This isn't just any dog training- it's an 18 day board and train facility called Dynamic Dogs run by a guy, Ben, who also runs a K-9 training facility. When we pick up Mico in 18 days, he'll be the star in his own dog show to display his new skills. I can't wait!
Let me just say this: Mico is a great dog. He has the sweetest disposition and he's truly a gentle giant. The trainers at Dynamic Dogs even asked where we found him because they were so impressed with his friendly personality (and wrote down the breeder's website, boondockdogs.com, to check it out for themselves).
Mico is a great dog. But he needs training. Mico and I had a really hard time together last week, so I've been looking forward to this training even more than ever. I think the behaviors that used to be annoying began to affect me more intensely recently, probably due to a combination of maternal instinct to protect my baby and hormones. Whatever it was, last week was rough for Mico and me. I think the time away from each other will be good for our relationship and remind me how much I enjoy Mico's company and how grateful I am to have such a sweet dog. That said, I probably won't miss him until next week. Until then, I'll enjoy not going through the process of taking Tye and Mico out 4 times a day. I'll also relish the slobber-free coffee table... and chairs... and walls, blankets, pillows, pants, garbage can, floors, shower door...
Mico, I know this is going to be a big couple of weeks for you. It won't be easy, but your life will be so much better after you're done. I'll happily walk you all over Chicago to wear you out every day (you're even going to learn to walk next to the stroller!). And, I know I'll appreciate your big self being around all that much more after missing you- which I know I will very soon. Good luck, dog.
